Denier is the single number that tells you everything about how a pair of tights will feel, look, and perform. Yet most shoppers ignore it entirely — and end up with sheer tights at a winter wedding or opaque ones at a beach brunch. Here's how to get it right every time.
What does denier actually mean?
Denier (D) measures the weight of the yarn used to make hosiery. The lower the number, the finer and sheerer the fabric. The higher the number, the thicker and more opaque.
Your quick denier cheat sheet
- 8D–12D — Barely-there. Ultra-sheer, delicate, best for formal evening events. Handle with care.
- 15D–20D — Everyday sheer. Polished, lightweight, pairs beautifully with workwear and dresses.
- 30D–40D — The sweet spot. Semi-opaque, versatile, wearable almost year-round in Nairobi.
- 50D–70D — Opaque. Great coverage, warmer, ideal for cooler evenings or air-conditioned offices.
- 100D–200D — Extra opaque. Maximum warmth and coverage. Think cosy, fashion-forward winter dressing.
Which denier is right for you?
Match your denier to your occasion and outfit. For a corporate meeting, 20D–40D looks intentional and sleek. For a casual weekend brunch, 40D–70D gives coverage without feeling heavy. For a statement fashion moment, 100D+ in a bold colour or pattern is your best friend.
A note on quality
The same denier can feel very different across brands. Gipsy 40D and Penti 40D use different yarn constructions — which is why trying a few brands to find your preferred feel is worth it.
